Advisory Group Member, STELARR Project
Derek is an Advisory Group member for the STELARR Project. He holds a bachelor's degree in commercial livestock and rangeland grazing systems, and PhD in agricultural economics specialised in the industrial organisation of food and fibre systems. Derek spent 25 years as a consultant working in food and fibre marketing system transformation in economies in transition in Europe, the former Soviet Union, Asia and Africa. His clients include the World Bank, FAO, European, US and Australian development agencies, philanthropies and the private sector. Originally a sheep and cattle farmer in New Zealand, Derek has now worked in over 40 countries. His six years based in Nairobi, Kenya at the International Livestock Research Institute saw Derek's systems-based development work extend to the environment and climate change. His long-held passion for natural fibres is leading him to examine new models for rangeland restoration which engage the downstream value chain.
